Cass County Catfish win Class AA state amateur baseball tournament championship
The Cass County Catfish defeated the Jamestown Greyhounds 7-5 in the Class AA state amateur baseball tournament at Jack Brown Stadium on Sunday night.
Cass County built a 5-0 lead and held on behind a strong pitching performance by Justin Wennerberg. The Foley, Minn., native allowed just one earned run on six hits with seven strikeouts. The Hounds were coming off a 24-hit barrage in the semifinals against Vallley City.
Jared Meiklejohn, Travis Jones, Alex Klever and Mitch Scheer each had two hits for Cass County, which lost to the Hounds in the championship game last year.
Nate Soulis had a two-hit game for the Hounds. Soulis blasted a solo home run (the only long ball of the tournament) to the deepest part of the park in the sixth inning for the Hounds. The ball cleared the left-center field fence.
