Mullowney eyeing West Region title
Connor Mullowney will be gunning for a West Region singles title in boys tennis today in Bismarck.
The Jamestown High School senior cruised into the conference tournament semifinals Friday with a pair of victories, assuring him the highest West Region finish of his career. Mullowney captured fifth last season as a junior.
"I've never been in this spot before and I'm happy to be here," Mullowney said. "But my goal at the beginning of the season was to reach the final and that hasn't changed at all. I just have to rise above and keep playing how I'm playing."
Mullowney is already locked into the state tournament and will face Bismarck Legacy senior Bradley Moylan this morning at 11:30 with a trip to the regional final on the line. Mullowney lost one set to Moylan 6-3 in round-robin play earlier this fall.
"I haven't had much luck against him, but anything can happen," Mullowney said. "He gets a lot of balls back. I'll have to stay patient and stay within my game and not beat myself up."
Jamestown High School's doubles team of Cole Bennion and Ryder Lunzman have also punched its ticket to state. Bennion and Lunzman went 2-1 Friday and can finish no worse than eighth.
They'll face Bismarck's Lucas Schell and Calvin Karalus this morning at 11. Jamestown's second doubles team of Isaac Mimong and Kaden Williams fell to Karalus and Schell 2-1 in loser-out play.
"It was pretty fun to watch our guys play today," Jamestown coach Ryan Iliff said. "We definitely got off to fast starts in the first rounds. Obviously, as you go you face better teams, but we competed all they way through today."
The Jays' Baylee Hatlewick and Ryder Pringle are both still alive in the singles tournament and can each lock up trips to state with a victory this morning. Hatlewick faces Century's Andrew Peterson, while Pringle faces Williston's Matt Richter, at 8:30.
The state boys tennis tournament begins Thursday in Grand Forks.
"We're playing at a high level right now," Iliff said. "We hope to get those other guys through to state (today)."
