Blue Jays sweep Saints

It wasn't the prettiest sweep of the season, but the result stood just the same for Jamestown High School

The Blue Jays defeated Bismarck St. Mary's 25-17, 27-25, 25-21 Thursday on the volleyball court in Bismarck. But the Saints made Jamestown battle, especially in the second set.

Trailing 6-0 early and 24-21 late, the Jays were able to muster a midnight-hour rally to win in extra points.

"We started off the match pretty good, but then all of a sudden we just lost focus and were going through the motions, and (the Saints) caught fire a little bit," Jamestown coach Sara Hegerle said. "They should have won that second set, but our kids woke up and battled. It was a good win."

Rallying to wins should prove to be valuable experience gained with the postseason right around the corner.

"We showed some resiliency in that we were down and were able to fight back," Hegerle said. "Those are good lessons to go through. It was nice to see them pull themselves out of the hole."

McKayla Kurtz sent 14 kills to the floor for the Jays, while Megan Gaffaney turned up 29 assists and Alyssa Ukestad finished with 20 digs and three ace serves. Jamestown hosts Dickinson tonight at 7 p.m. at Jerry Meyer Arena.

"It wasn't pretty. We didn't pass particularly well and our sets were a little off," Hegerle said. "But St. Mary's does a nice job of putting pressure on you and they deserve credit for that."
