Jimmies bounce back vs. Dordt
It was important for the Jimmie men's basketball team to forgot about Friday fast.
Mission accomplished. University of Jamestown brushed off an 81-80 buzzer-beater loss to fifth-ranked Northwestern College with a 99-82 win over Dordt College back at Newman Arena on Saturday.
"To bounce back and get back on the right track from the day before, it was huge," Jamestown junior guard Kevin Oberweiser said.
Oberweiser went 5-for-6 from 3-point range against the Defenders and finished with 21 points. He nailed three of those treys in the first half, complementing another nice outing from senior post Sam Leighton.
Leighton produced 23 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks. The Jimmies led 54-46 at the half behind 17 of Leighton's 23.
Oberweiser, tagged by UJ head coach Danny Neville as a 3-ball threat prior to the season, transferred to UJ this year from Montana State-Northern, where he spent one year wearing a redshirt and two more on the court.
"I don't limit myself to just the perimeter," Oberweiser said. "But it's something that I put a lot of work into, so it's something I'm confident in doing."
His new state-of-the-art surroundings inside Harold Newman Arena also appears to be helping said confidence.
"I love it here," Oberweiser said. "It's an amazing home to be in and it's been fun breaking it in."
The Defenders racked up 30 fouls Saturday, sending the Jimmies to the foul line where they sank 24 of 29 shots. Ben Weisbeck added 19 points for the Jimmies and Jon Purintun scored 12.
The Jimmies get a home rematch Wednesday with 10th-ranked Dakota Wesleyan. The Tigers topped the Jimmies 95-80 in Mitchell, S.D., last Tuesday.
"We're excited about the win, but we're not going to worry about it too long," Oberweiser said. "We got another tough team coming up next, so we're going to move forward pretty quick after this."
