The changeup was not working for Kalton Agnes on Friday night.

That's OK, everything else was.

The Langdon, N.D., lefty fired an eight-inning no-hitter in the Enderlin Indies' 1-0 win over the Valley City Saints in the opening game of the Class AA state amateur baseball tournament. Agnes, a key pitcher for Mayville State during the college season, struck out 16 batters in the crisply-played affair. The game took just 91 minutes Friday night at Jack Brown Stadium.

"I didn't throw many changeups. The one I did I got hit in the arm," Agnes said of a liner back to the mound. "I mostly just stuck with fastballs and curveballs."

Nate Rodriguez, a University of Jamestown recruit, matched zeroes with Agnes until the eighth. Rodriguez, who played Legion ball all summer for Valley City, registered nine strikeouts and allowed just four hits.

"I didn't even really know I was going to pitch until I got here," Rodriguez said. "It was fun. It was good to be out there."

As Agnes and Rodriguez kept hanging zeroes, it became increasingly clear one run might do it.

The Indies got it in the bottom of the eighth when Trevor Koshiol singled home Brandon Roesler with the winner.

"It was a good ball game," said Agnes. "It's a lot of fun to play with these guys. It's so relaxed ... we're just out here trying to win the Indies' 17th state title."

Agnes is good to go again if called upon. No opposing batter will want to see that. In his last two state amateur starts he 33 strikeouts in 15 innings. Agnes estimated he's made between eight and 10 appearances for the Indies this summer.

"I gotta rubber arm," he said. "Any time they need me, I'll be ready."
