Tim Smith recently conquered civil engineering at NDSU. Compared to that, getting a few knocks at the ballpark is no big deal.

However, the former Jamestown High School multi-sport performer didn't seem overly impressed with his performance at the plate Friday night for the Jamestown Greyhounds.

"Sometimes, you can get a little lucky," he joked.

The 2009 Jamestown High School graduate had two of the Hounds' 10 hits in their 12-2 win over the Hazen-Beulah Blackjaws in game 2 of the Class AA state tournament at Jack Brown Stadium. The Hounds are the two-time defending champs.

Smith played a handful of games with the Greyhounds this summer after not playing for three years.

"It's a blast. These guys are awesome," Smith said. "I've been playing baseball with Danny (Fischer), (Jake) Stilwell and Riley (Schafer) forever. It's a lotta fun to be back out here again."

Smith's booming RBI-double scored Ryan Sand with the first of the Hounds' eight-run, third-inning outburst. Brady Smith and Nolan Kratz added two hits apiece. All nine players scored.

Hounds' ace Blaze Culliton cruised through five innings on the mound to get the win.

Smith is looking to land an engineering job and would be more than willing to stick around town.

"You know of anything? Line it up," he joked.

The Hounds, 9-3 on the season, take on Cass County in the third pool-play game today. First up is Beulah-Hazen taking on Cass County at 11 a.m. Valley City and Class A tournament champs Tolna play game 2. Enderlin and Tolna play the finale.

Semifinals start at 11 a.m. on Sunday with the championship set for around 3.
