Jimmies breeze past No. 16 Tabor
University of Jamestown's bats remained hot Wednesday, Feb. 28, in Hillsboro, Kansas.
Jimmie baseball bashed 18 hits in a 15-6 trouncing of 16th-ranked Tabor College (Kan.). Quinn Irey smashed a two-run home run in the ninth inning, part of a three-hit day for the Jimmie senior catcher from Bismarck.
The Jimmies' Scooter Turin, Drake Pilat and Jaden Yackley also produced three hits each in the contest. Jamestown (10-0) opened the spring Tuesday with victories over Northwestern College (Iowa) and Baker University.
"We swung the bat very well, while also taking advantage of a few errors, and were able to pile up a bunch of runs on the board," Jimmie baseball coach Tom Hager said. "I'm very happy with how our guys put the ball in play today against a very good team. We were able to do it early and often."
Junior starter Dakota Nelson got out of a jam in the first inning, allowing a pair of runs before settling in to get through the third. Jamestown trailed 2-1 until breaking the game open with five runs in the third.
Marshal Burgess and Kaleb Binstock combined to pitch the Jimmies to the eighth.
"You gotta give Dakota Nelson credit for minimizing the damage there in the first inning," Hager said. "He kept it a one-run game and was able to give us three quality innings, and Burgess and Binstock both did outstanding today in middle relief."
The Jimmies play a four-game series at Evangel University (7-6) in Springfield, Mo., Friday and Saturday.
"To be able to get a quality win like this at their place early in the season, that's a good win for our program," Hager said.
