Jimmies fare well on road

Arizona was kind to University of Jamestown men’s basketball over the weekend.

The Jimmies (9-2) d e f e a t - ed Arizona C h r i s t i a n U n i v e r s i t y 100-86 in Phoenix on Friday and (RV) Benedictine University-Mesa 79-69 in Mesa on Saturday.

Senior forward Sam Johnson made 5 of 5 from 3-point range and scored 19 points for the Jimmies in their 14-point win over the Firestorm (4-1) to start the weekend. All five Jamestown starters hit double figures in scoring.

Jon Purintun also connected twice from downtown and scored 19, while Ben Weisbeck converted 9 of 10 at the foul line and scored a team-high 21. The Jimmies made 11 treys and shot nearly 56 percent from the field.

The hot shooting continued for the Jimmies on Saturday against the Red Hawks (4-3), even with Johnson finally struggling a tad from 3-point range (1 of 6). Jamestown made good on 50 percent from beyond the arc and 53 percent total.

Junior guard Kevin Oberweiser splashed in 6 of 9 from 3-point land and scored a game-high 26. Weisbeck tallied 19 points, converting 8 of 10 at the foul line.

Jamestown opens North Star Athletic Association play at Dakota State on Friday and at Mayville State on Saturday.

J immie women sink Seahawks

The ninth-ranked Jimmie women’s basketball team crushed Keiser University 73-43 Saturday to wrap up the Florida Memorial University Thanksgiving Tournament in Miami Gardens, Fla.

Jamestown dominated the first period 22-2 and never looked back, en route to outrebounding the Seahawks 58-24. Keiser University (4-5) received votes in the NAIA Division II top 25 preseason coaches’ poll.

Jamestown’s 6-foot-3 junior center Jenna Doyle brooke loose for her first Jimmie double-double, scoring 15 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Senior wing Paige Emmel buried four 3-pointers and led the Jimmies in scoring with 18.
