Jimmie women push streak to 11

A 43-20 scoring advantage during the second and third quarters helped propel the sixth-ranked Jimmie women's basketball team to a 67-54 win over Briar Cliff University Friday at the Briar Cliff Holiday Classic in Sioux City, Iowa.

University of Jamestown (15-2) picked up its 11th victory in a row and faces sixth-ranked Morningside (Iowa) today at 1 p.m. to finish the two-day classic. The Mustangs have played to a record of 13-3.

The Jimmies Bryn Woodside scored nine points Friday, while Marina Nowak added six as Jamestown outscored the Chargers 23-11 in the second quarter to take a 35-23 lead into halftime.

Jamestown kept up the defensive pressure in the third quarter, holding Briar Cliff (6-10) to just nine points on 3-of-13 shooting. UJ made 8 of 14 shot attempts, including 3 of 4 from 3-point range on the way to a 20-point quarter.

Briar Cliff shot 67 percent (10 of 15) in the final 10 minutes to cut into the Jimmies' lead. Jamestown went 5 of 14 in the final stanza and saw their 23-point lead cut to 13 by the end of the game.

Woodside finished with 20 points to lead all scorers while dishing out four assists and recording two steals. Nowak, who missed the three previous games due to injury, came off the bench to score 10. Jenna Doyle pulled down five rebounds and blocked three shots, and Allison Jablonsky scored eight points, grabbed four rebounds, and blocked a pair of shots.

Both teams shot just over 40 percent for the game, with Jamestown finishing at 42.4 percent (25 of 59) and the Chargers at 41.5 percent (22 of 53). Briar Cliff had a 30-29 rebounding edge and committed one more turnover (21-20) than the Jimmies.
