Former Jamestown Mayor Charlie Kourajian dies at 87

Optimist Club weekly athletes

Sydney Soulis, Aden Braun and Marina Nowak were named Jamestown Optimist Club athletes of the week.

Soulis, a senior on the Blue Jay girls hockey team, scored four goals at the Crookston tournament, including a hat trick against Park Rapids. The Blue Jays defeated Crookston 5-2 and Park Rapids 7-4.

Braun, a seventh-grader on the Blue Jay wrestling team, earned runner-up honors at 95 pounds at the Rumble on the Red junior varsity wrestling tournament. The tournament featured 2,000 wrestlers on 87 teams from six states. The Blue Jay JV finished 28th.

Nowak, a junior on the Jimmie women's basketball team from Rogers, Minn., returned after a three-game absence to injury to help UJ sweep Briar Cliff and Morningside at the Briar Cliff Holiday Classic in Sioux City, Iowa. Nowak scored 17 points on 6 of 10 shooting.

St. Mary's up to second in 'A' poll

Bismarck St. Mary's girls basketball leaped from fifth to second in the latest Class A media rankings.

The Saints (7-1) still trail unanimous No. 1 Bismarck Century (8-0). Fargo Davies (8-0) remained at No. 1 in the boys poll.

Boys basketball program planned

Jamestown Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring a six-week basketball program for boys in grades 1-4.

Games will be played Saturday mornings beginning Jan. 27. Registration forms are available at the Parks and Rec. office (1002 2nd Ave. SE) or www.jamestownparksandrec.com.

Registration forms have also been delivered to all grade schools. Forms can be dropped off at the Parks and Rec. mail slot after 4:30 p.m.

The program fee is $20. The deadline to submit registrations is Jan. 19.

Women's volleyball league scheduled

Jamestown Parks & Recreation Department is offering a women's winter/spring volleyball league beginning Jan. 22 at Two Rivers Activity Center.

Rosters and registration fees must be turned into the Parks & Rec. office or mail slot by 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 16. The team fee is $225 and a $50 late fee will be added after the deadline.

Cabin Fever Days participation

Jamestown Parks and Recreation Department's Cabin Fever Days are planned for Feb. 2-11.
