Blue Jays post best round

Lauryn Hibl and Cora Wolsky scored their best rounds of the season Monday for the Blue Jays, and teammate Kyra Vogel shot a second straight 88 at the Minot Invitational.

It all added up to Jamestown High School's best girls golf team score through six events. The Blue Jays carded a combined 363 at Vardon Golf Club to finish sixth of nine teams.

"Club selection today was much better, for sure," said Jamestown coach Tracy Gustafson, whose Blue Jays shaved 10 strokes off their previous best round. "We used our practice time fine-tuning that and they're getting smarter in knowing their options. One club can lead to three or four different types of shots, so I see that developing.

"The greens were also pretty friendly for us. I saw some really good putts."

Hibl placed 17th individually at 84, five strokes better than her top round of 2018 to this point. Vogel, who also fired an 88 last week in Dickinson, tied for 21st.

Alyssa Zachrison's 94 was third on the team score, while Wolsky's 97 followed. Jamestown is still looking for a meet where Hibl, Vogel and Zachrison sync up.

"Lauryn, Kyra and Alyssa, I can see all of them in the lowers 80s for sure," Gustafson said. "We haven't really had a day where all three have been able to hit that, and I think with a little bit more work and time Cora could be more consistent as well.

"I'd like to see our errors shortening up to bogeys instead of double bogeys, but we were definitely more consistent today."

Bismarck Century's Hannah Herbel defeated Minot's Becca Tschetter in a two-hole playoff for medalist honors at 74. Century (312) cruised to the team title.

Next up is the Bismarck Invitational at Tom O'Leary Golf Course on Sept. 7. Just three more invitationals remain before the WDA fires up Sept. 24 at Jamestown Country Club.

"It's nice to know we have a little more time to dive into making some corrections before our next meet," Gustafson said.
