Gumke earns No. 1 spot

Jamestown High School’s Ethan Gumke is the top-ranked Class A wrestler at 195 pounds.

Gumke, a senior, earned the top nod in the second coaches’ poll of the season, which was released on Wednesday. Gumke moved up one spot from the initial poll where he was ranked behind Zach Doty of Valley City. Doty dropped down to 182 and is ranked No. 1 there.

Gumke is one of four Blue Jays ranked.

Sophomore Paxton Mewes holds the No. 4 spot down at 132. That’s two places lower from where he opened the season.

Caleb Ellingson and Tristan Shipley also are ranked.

Ellingson is sixth at 170, down one spot, while Shipley fell two spots to No. 6 at 182.

The Blue Jays compete in a tournament in Valley City on Saturday. After a break around Christmas, they’ll head to Fargo to compete in the Rumble on the Red Dec. 27-28.

Bismarck edged out West Fargo (173-169) for the No. 1 spot in the poll. Bismarck Century is ranked third, Turtle Mountain fourth and Dickinson fifth.
