Mewes, Jays fare well

The five Jamestown High School wrestlers competing in the Rumble on the Red got off to a strong start on Friday.

Paxton Mewes led the way, going 3-1 in his first four matches at 132 for the Blue Jays. Mewes’ impressive outing at the 66-team meet at the Fargodome, highlighted a 9-5 performance for JHS wrestlers. Also in action were Caleb Ellingson (170), Tristan Shipley (182), Eathan Gumke (195) and Kyle Anderson (220).

Mewes won his opening two matches, beating Conner Denman of Cloquet-Esko (Minn.) and Logan Lunde of Foley (Minn.). Mewes dropped his next match to Maulo Woiwar of Apple Valley (Minn.), but the JHS sophomore followed with a 3-2 win over Collin DeGrammont of Lakeville North.

Ellingson went 2-1 in his first three matches on Friday.

The 170-pound junior split his first two matches and then stayed alive with a 5-0 win over Travis Brown of United South Central (Minn.).

At 182, Tristan Shipley came out firing with pins over Casey Kulas of Cloquet-Esko in 2 minutes and 22 seconds and Janse Anderson of White Bear Lake (Minn.) at the 3:51 mark. In the quarterfinals, Shipley and South Border standout Tucker Meidinger went head-to-head with Meidinger prevailing 11-10.

Gumke and Anderson were each 1-1 at press time.

Gumke, ranked No. 1 at 195, went win-loss.

Anderson dropped his opening match at 220, but answered with a pin over Moorhead’s Brody Jerome in 2:06 seconds.

The tournament, which has 19 mats up and running, concludes today.
