Gumke makes finals

Eathan Gumke has one match remaining in his high school career, and it likely means everything to him.

The Jamestown High School senior secured a spot in the 195-pound finals by pinning Fargo Davies’ Nick Kjera in 5 minutes, 50 seconds at the Class A state wrestling tournament at the Bismarck Civic Center.

“It is exciting to be in the finals,” Gumke said. “I dreamed about it and now I have one match to go.”

Gumke has an unfamiliar opponent in today’s finals, which start at 3 p.m. He meets West Fargo senior Tanner Kuznia.

“He is going to be tough,” Gumke said. “He is a really good athlete. I have not wrestled him before, which is sometimes a good thing because he doesn’t know what you are going to do, but at the same time I do not know what he is going to bring either. It is a double-edged sword.”

Gumke improved his record to 37-5 with the semifinal victory. He has the chance to be Jamestown’s first titlist since Zane Braun in 2012.

The Blue Jays had two other semifinalists, but they didn’t fare as well as Gumke.

Coming off a thrilling first day that saw him pin the No. 1 and 8 seeds, 220-pound junior Kyle Anderson went up against defending state champion Olaf Hanson. The Fargo North senior won by fall in 45 seconds.

At 138, Paxton Mewes gave unbeaten No. 1 seed Curt Zachmeier of Mandan a battle, eventually losing by 4-2 decision.

Caleb Ellingson is also still alive, winning his wrestleback match by 8-0 major decision over Valley City’s Mason Bjornson. Triston Shipley, seeded fourth at 182, is done after falling 8-3 to Fargo North’s Nathan Aamold.

While Gumke has a chance to win a state championship, the other three can still place as high as third. Jamestown sits in 11th place with 53 team points.
