Optimist Club cites athletes for awards

Erin Hillerud of Jamestown High School and Hannah Steele and Mike Brousseau of the University of Jamestown have been named athletes of the week by the Jamestown Optimist Club.

Hillerud, a sophomore gymnast for the Blue Jays, placed 10th in the all around at the West Region meet in Dickinson on Friday with a score of 35.1. She was 10th on vault and floor and seventh on beam.

Steele, a senior from Circle Pines, Minn., scored 41 points and dished out 27 assists in helping the Jimmies to a pair of wins last week. She made 10 of 26 shots, went 16-for-26 on free throws and made five of 11 3-pointers.

Brousseau, a junior from Acton, Calif., set a school record in the weight throw of 54-feet, 11.25-inches only to have the record taken away by teammate Garrett Tenney at the same meet in Bemidji, Minn. Both throwers have qualified for the NAIA national meet March 6-8 in Geneva, Ohio.
