Peterson picked for honor

Paige Peterson was named the girls Class A senior athlete of the year on Saturday at the state tournament in Minot.

Peterson led the Blue Jays in scoring (18.7 points per game) and rebounding (13.5) as Jamestown finished 12-12 on the season and went 0-2 at the state tournament.

Peterson, who also averaged 2.3 assists and 1.5 steals per game, was also named to the all-tournament team. The Augustana recruit shot 54.7 percent from the field.

Davis’ Kretchman honored

Tanner Kretchman of Fargo Davies was named the boys Class A player of the year.

Kretchman, who led the Eagles to a state championship on Saturday night, averaged 29.2 points, 5 assists and 2.3 steals.

Kretchman, a Minnesota State University Moorhead, recruit, was also voted Mr. Basketball. He is believed to be the first Mr. Basketball award winner to play for a Mr. Basketball winner. Davies coach Bart Manson won the award in 1991.

Stritch in Final 4

Cardinal Stritch, Wis., the team which eliminated the University of Jamestown from the NAIA national women’s basketball tournament, is in the semifinals.

Stritch (27-6) defeated Morningside, Iowa 82-71 in the Elite 8 on Saturday in Sioux City, Iowa. Stritch defeated the Jimmies 76-54 on Friday in the Sweet 16.

College of Ozarks, Mo., the team which eliminated Mayville State on Friday, also is the Final Four after it knocked off No. 1 seed Northwestern, Iowa, on Saturday 90-76.

Undefeated Saint Francis, Ind., and once-beaten Davenport, Mich., the No. 1 and 2 teams in the last several polls of the season, and both No. 1 seeds, make up the other half of the Final Four. The semifinals begin tonight at 6 p.m. The national title game is Tuesday.
