Century blanks JHS

The score doesn’t show it, but the Jamestown coaching staff felt good about how its young team fared against powerhouse Bismarck Century on Thursday night.

The Patriots, often the toast of the West Region, blanked the Blue Jays 9-0 in Bismarck.

However, five of the six singles matches featured close sets, two of which went to a third set.

“This is probably the best we played (against Century) that we can remember,” assistant coach Jordan Koushkouski said. “We came out swinging pretty hard today. We’ve improved a lot, which is surprising given that we haven’t practiced outside all week. This is a nice surprise.”

Erin Mullowney gave Alyssa Wolf all she could handle at No. 1 singles, losing 3-6, 6-3 and 7-5. It was more of the same at No. 2 singles, where Paige Fettig beat Jamestown’s Jenna Reed 6-4, 6-7 (4) and 11-9.

Bailee Graves also provided a stiff test to Century’s Anne Dickson before succumbing 7-5 and 6-4 at No. 3 singles. Maria LeFevre (7-5) and Kaitlin Mullowney (6-4) also played close sets in losses at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively.

“Hopefully, just improvement from here,” Koushkouski said. “Then we’ll be sitting pretty well come middle May.”

The Blue Jays are back in action on Tuesday, when they host Mandan.
