Optimist Club honors athletes

Jamestown High School’s Beka Hilgemann and Austin Rene, along with the University of Jamestown’s Bre Carlson and Michael Strain, were all selected as athletes of the week by the Jamestown Optimist Club.

Hilgemann, a junior on the Blue Jay girls track and field team, placed fifth in the shot put at the Bismarck Invite with a state-qualifying and personal-best throw of 36 feet, five inches. She also placed fifth in the javelin with a toss of 95-2.

Rene, a sophomore on the Blue Jay boys golf team, began the season by capturing the individual title at the Steve Hurd Memorial Golf Tournament hosted in Minot. His score of 73 led the Jays to a second-place finish and it also marked the lowest round of his Blue Jay career.

Carlson, a freshman on the Jimmie women’s track and field team from Jamestown, placed second in the 100 meter, third in the 200 and helped the 400-meter relay team to a fourth-place finish at the Northern Outdoor Invitational in Aberdeen. Her time of 12.44 in the 100 moved her into a tie for fourth place on the Jimmie career 100-meter dash list.

Strain, a sophomore on the Jimmie men’s golf team from Motley, Minnesota, shot a 78-73—151 to finish third overall at the Klosterman Spring Classic at the Jamestown Country Club. Strain was the highest North Star Athletic Association finisher.
