There was plenty to feel good about on Saturday for the Jamestown boys golf team.

And it ended in a photo finish.

Jackson Davis of Turtle Mountain beat Bismarck St. Mary’s Grant Dvorak in a playoff, as both shot a 74. If that wasn’t enough excitement, just three strokes separated the top four teams.

0 Talk about it

St. Mary’s scored a 311 to win the Bismarck Century Invite at Tom O’Leary Golf Course, while Jamestown (312), Century (313) and Minot (314) weren’t far behind

“We all got good at math the last hour of the tournament,” Jamestown coach Dean Kraft joked. “Everybody was doing the math, trying to figure out what score they’d need.”

The Blue Jays took second by a single stroke for the second time this season. They did so thanks to four scores under 80, paced by Austin Rene’s 77, which tied four others for sixth place. It was a good sight to see, Kraft said, considering Rene has struggled as of late.

“He got off to a tough start, then he righted the ship,” Kraft said. “He played a lot better. His putter got a little hot at the end of the round, too.”

Jakobi Lux and Nick Stockert both tied for 11th place with three others, carding a 78.

“Nick Stockert has been getting better and better — a lot of his scores have been marred by bad holes. That’s a sign of improvement,” Kraft said. “Jakobi played well, though he’d tell you he didn’t. He played smart. He wasn’t driving the ball well, so he put his driver away.”

Stahlhut, who has been the team’s top golfer to this point, had a 79. He was in the mix for medalist honors, but ran into serious trouble on the back nine and had to settle for a tie for 12th place.

“He was 1-over through 12 holes and he parred 17 and 18,” Kraft said. “In that four-hole stretch (between), he was 9-over par. He was playing really good. He just got wild off the tee.”

Eighth-grader Cole Bennion nearly had his score used, as he shot an 81. Connor Mullowney also played varsity, shooting a 107.

Kraft said it’s well known that Tom O’Leary is a shorter, easier course. Par is 69.

“Relevant to that, we did play better,” Kraft said. “We just need to practice. Every coach is saying it. We’re all rusty. We get a couple nice weeks of weather, you’ll see the scores come down.”

The Blue Jays are scheduled to play at the Dickinson Invite at Heart River Golf Course on Monday, in what is a makeup meet from an earlier postponement.
