Off night for JHS gymnasts in Valley

Valley City proved its one of the top gymnastics teams in the state.

Beating Jamestown will do that and that's what the Hi-Liners did on Tuesday, 138.625-135.30.

It was an off night for the Blue Jays, according to coach Andrea Bitz.

"It was very shaky," Bitz said. "We had some moments, but not enough. We just gotta clean it up."

The Blue Jays' score was down from where it has been the last handful of meets.

"We have some new skills we didn't score on today," JHS head coach Dave Tews said. "You have to give Valley the edge today. They were a little more confident in their new skills than we were.

"Those are things we have to improve on to stay in that upper echelon."

Valley City senior Taylor Johnson pulled away for the win with a mark of 35.9.

"She's a very consistent performer for them," Bitz said.

Madison Mandan's 34.375 led the Blue Jays.

"Maddy had a pretty solid performance," Bitz said.

Mandan and teammate Peyton Rudnick tied with Valley City's Grace Anderson for the win on vault (8.75).

"Peyton (Rudnick) can hold herself together in a chaotic situation where some of those other kids can not," Tews said.

It was not a traditional dual format. The Blue Jays had 18 girls competing.

Both coaches said senior Maggie Ridley had a solid day, including fifth on vault (8.65) and beam (8.025).

Haley Nelson's 8.85 on floor was team-leading, while Rachel Schiele led on bars (8.3).

The Blue Jays are back on the road Friday, heading to Bismarck to compete against a strong eight- or nine-team field. Only six entries per event are allowed.

"There will be less distractions, so hopefully our focus and performance improves," Tews said.
