Demons edge Blue Jays
Thursday's West Region girls tennis dual between Jamestown and Bismarck was much closer than the final score would indicate.
The Demons essentially escaped with a 6-3 victory, after the Blue Jays jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play and dropped a pair of three-set matches in singles competition. Bismarck entered the dual as the No. 4 team in the region.
"Even though it was a loss, I thought we did really well to play a team like that as close as we did," Jamestown coach Jordan Koushkouski said. "It started with doubles and we came out firing."
Megan Larson and Savannah Montoya topped Bismarck's Skyler LaFave and Sydney Helgeson at No. 2 doubles, 6-3, 7-6(7). The Blue Jays' Medora Pringle and Courtney Peterson followed suit at No. 3, defeating Delaney Scanson and Morgan Fisher, 6-0, 6-2.
Peterson went on to scoot past Fisher 6-1, 7-5 at No. 6 singles, but close finishes at both No. 1 and No. 4 singles tipped the scale. The Jays' Kaitlin Mullowney battled Lauryn Andre in defeat 6-7(3), 7-6(5), 6-1, while Montoya succumbed to Helgeson in a super tiebreaker 7-6(6), 6-7(3), 10-1.
"If a couple of those close matches go our way, we're possibly looking at maybe a 5-4 or 6-3 win in our favor," Koushkouski said. "It was nice to see them playing like that heading into the postseason next week."
Jamestown's busy weekend continues today against Fargo Davies in Valley City at noon. The Blue Jays will wrap up the regular season on Saturday hosting Bismarck Century, weather permitting.
The West Region tournament is scheduled for May 25-27 in Minot.
