UJ women hold off Ashford

Ashford tried to get one by the University of Jamestown women’s basketball team.

But even at a slower pace, the sixth-ranked Jimmies triumphed 59-46 on Saturday in Clinton, Iowa.

0 Talk about it

“Their style of play and what they do — they really tried to slow the game down,” Jamestown coach Greg Ulland said. “I didn’t feel like we played well at all. It’s definitely not a typical performance for us.”

Jordan Bridges paced the Jimmies with 11 points, while Chelsey Frydenlund had nine. All-American point guard Hannah Steele was held to eight points, but did have six assists.

Jamestown led 26-21 at halftime.

“In the first half, there were six or seven layups that we missed,” Ulland said. “They did a good job of taking us out of things. We had our typical runs in the first and second halves that kind of separated things.”

Regardless of how the win came, Ulland said he can’t be too disappointed. Jamestown beat No. 20 St. Ambrose 80-75 on Friday night.

“Walk away from a road trip with two wins — you’ve got to be happy,” Ulland said. “We’ll go back, watch it, break it down and show kids what we want to get out of it. I’m sure other teams will do that to us.”

Ashford’s Janell Anthony had a team-high 12 points. Ashford held a significant edge on the boards at 46-27.

No. 23 Ashford

tops Jimmies

A 3-of-26 performance from the 3-point line doomed the University of Jamestown in a 75-54 loss to No. 23 Ashford.

Brequan Tucker had a team-high 12 points, while brother Breshion added eight. Mark Hoge, the team’s All-American guard, was held to six points.

Anthony Woods had a game-high 20 for Ashford, which led 38-29 at halftime.

Rebounding proved tough with the Jimmies’ lack of size, as Ashford won the battle of the boards 41-23. Breshion Tucker, a 5-foot-11 point guard, had a team-best five rebounds.

Both Jimmie squads are back in action on Wednesday, when they host Trinity Bible College at the Jamestown Civic Center.
