DWU trumps Jimmies
University of Jamestown wrestling coach C.J. Campbell wasn’t too angry about his third-ranked wrestler getting pinned in the final match Wednesday night.
The two wrestlers will likely see each other again.
Trever Devestern of Dakota Wesleyan, ranked second in the North Region, put All-American Pat Nord on his back, winning by fall in 2 minutes, 27 seconds at the Hansen Center. The victory put the finishing touches on DWU’s 34-9 dual triumph.
DWU coach Matt Sedivy said that Devestern and Nord are natural pinners. Devestern is also an All-American, improving to 19-1 with the win.
“They could probably wrestle 10 times, and it’s gonna be a pin one way or another,” he said. “Nord seems to be a great pinner — he’s a dangerous wrestler. Trever, our guy, is a dangerous wrestler, too. It could be a pin every time.”
The pin came in the final minute of the first period, which Campbell felt was OK.
“I’m comfortable in that we didn’t reveal too many tricks because we’re gonna get that opportunity back,” Campbell said.
The Jimmies won only two of 10 matches and one of their victories was a forfeit — Eddy Wilson at 141. The lone contested win came at 125, where Andre Aguinaga held off Chad McCannon by 6-1 decision.
Elsewhere, the Tigers took advantage of their muscle, getting a total of four pins in the dual.
“We have a few guys that are really good at putting you on your back,” Sedivy said.
Campbell said he knew his team was behind the 8-ball, considering it had four backups in the lineup.
“I’m not as disappointed in our performance as the scoreboard shows,” Campbell said. “I thought we matched up well with them at 33, 49, 57 and 65. Those matches could have easily gone in our favor had something gone differently.”
The highlight of the Jimmies’ losses was at 133. No. 1-ranked Richard Rios used a late takedown to beat Coby Horner by 6-4 decision.
Jamestown is back in action on Friday, when it travels to Willmar, Minn., for the Ridgewater Duals. The Jimmies compete in the Husky Open in St. Cloud, Minn., on Saturday.
