Area baseball roundup: Jimmies ink two recruits

Two California community college players have signed with the University of Jamestown baseball team.

Lance Ibesate and Jarin Gassett of Shasta College in Redding, California, will join the Jimmies in the fall.

Ibesate, a 5-foot-8, 165-pound middle infielder, hit .312 in his sophomore season for Shasta College, piling up 44 hits in 34 games. He scored 25 runs, drove in 17 and stole nine bases. He is a native of Juneau, Alaska.

Gassett, originally from Helena, Montana, hit .281 with 22 RBI and 13 runs in 35 games. The 5-11, 175-pounder played third base primarily.

“We are very excited that Lance and Jarin have chosen to become Jimmies,” UJ head coach Tom Hager said. “They are both quality individuals and we believe they will be a great fit for our baseball program.”

Ibesate was a first-team all-conference selection, while Gassett earned second-team honors. Both players have two years of eligibility remaining.

State amateur baseball tournaments scheduled

The North Dakota Amateur Baseball Inc. state tournaments are set for next month at Jack Brown Stadium.

The Class A state tournament will be held Aug. 7-10, the Class AA tournament will be held Aug. 14-17 and the Class AAA tournament will be held Aug. 22-24.

Teams are asked to register and indicate which tournament they intend to play in by July 28.

Cost is $150 and can be sent to R.D. Brown at 511 3rd St. SE, Jamestown, N.D., 58401.

The tournament dates are tentative depending on the number of teams that register.

Kindred tops Kidder County

Austin Olien fired a three-hit shutout as Kindred beat Kidder County 6-0 in the opener of an American Legion doubleheader Monday night in Steele.

Jayden Miller went 2-for-3 with a walk and three stolen bases for Kidder County, but it was held to just one hit otherwise.

Game 2 was tied 1-1 in the seventh inning when the game was suspended due to darkness.

Ben Steinolfson allowed one run over four innings and had a hit for Kidder County.
