Jimmie women victorious in opener

Getting off to a good start was a priority for the Jimmie women’s soccer team.

They accomplished that on Friday.

Freshman Connie Contreras scored early in the second half for the game’s only goal in a 1-0 University of Jamestown win over Morningside College.

“There’s always anxiety with a team in getting that first win. The last couple of years we started out 0-2, so to get that first one out of the way is pretty gratifying,” UJ head coach Nick Becker said.

It was a good victory for the Jimmies. Morningside was the regular season champion in the GPAC last season, posting a sparkling 14-3-4 record.

“Morningside is a good team. We knew we’d have to stick to the game plan and the girls did that for the most part,” Becker said. “This should be a nice confidence boost for our girls to have a good performance against a team like Morningside.”

Elisa Martin Grant stopped all six shots she faced, including a key save with less than 20 minutes to play on a golden scoring chance for the Mustangs.

The Jimmies showed increased depth from last year’s squad.

“We played 16. A couple of our girls took hard fouls and got a little dinged up, but the freshmen that came on responded well,” Becker said. “Whether a girl played 5 minutes or 20 minutes, they came in and were productive for us.”

The two teams play again today here at 1 p.m.

“It’s not ideal to play the same team back to back, but it will only make us better playing a quality team like Morningside,” Becker said. “We still have a lot to work on, but this was a positive step for our team.”
