Cards top Mustangs

Carrington scored three runs in both the third and fifth innings on Thursday, topping Midkota-Dakota Prairie-Lakota 7-1 in Region 3 baseball action.

Carrington's Payton Smith, Jayden Shipman and Kyle Leapaldt, along with the Mustangs' Hunter Gibson, all finished the game with two hits. Leapaldt was the winning pitcher, tossing six innings of one-run baseball.

Athletes picked for weekly awards

Haley Hillstrom, Savanna Nesemeier and Quinn Irey have been named athletes of the week by the Jamestown Optimist Club.

Hillstrom had posted two shutouts in goal for the Jamestown High soccer team. She's allowed just one goal in three games.

Nesemeier placed first at the Cobber Spring Invitational for the University of Jamestown women's golf team. The senior from Kindred led the Jimmies to the team title.

Irey, a junior from Bismarck on the UJ baseball team, hit a three-run home run in the Jimmies' 8-5 win over No. 5-ranked Bellevue (Neb.), snapping the Bruins' 27-game winning streak.

Fishing league begins May 16

Stutsman County Wildlife will be hosting its Tuesday night fishing league, beginning May 16 at Spiritwood Lake. Start time is 5:30 p.m

Anybody wanting to participate can join that night or any Tuesday night of the season, which runs through Aug. 15.
