Twins tops Astros late

USA Today Sports Tommy Milone pitches in the third inning for the Minnesota Twins on Monday night against the Houston Astros. It was the debut for Milone, who was acquired last month in a trade from the Oakland Athletics.

Joe Mauer’s two-run single in the top of the ninth inning lifted the Minnesota Twins to a 4-2 win over the Houston Astros on Monday night.

Tied 2-2 after eight innings, the Twins got to Houston reliever Josh Fields for two runs to win their second straight game. Minnesota beat Oakland Sunday afternoon.

Brian Duesning (3-2) got the win for the Twins after getting the final two outs in the bottom of the eight to quell a Houston rally.

Glen Perkins worked the ninth inning to record his 29th save.

Danny Santana went 3-for-5 with a run scored for the Twins, who finished 11 hits in the game.

Mauer finished 2-for-4 in his first game since last month. He was sidelined for more than a month to an oblique strain.

Eduardo Escobar added two hits and scored a run for the Twins, who scored a single run in the top of the first inning and another in the fourth.

Tommy Milon made his debut on the mound for the Twins. Milone allowed two runs on eight hits in six innings. He struck out five.

Milone was acquired from the Oakland Athletics last month for outfielder Sam Fuld.

Chris Carter hit a solo home run off Milone in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Jose Altuve also had a solo home run for the Astros, who climbed out of the cellar in the AL West recently. Texas is now in the basement.

Jake Marisnick went 4-for-4 for the Astros, all singles.

The series resumes tonight with Johan Pino (1-4) pitching for the Twins against Colin McHugh (4-9).

Twins trade Willingham

The Twins traded outfielder Josh Willingham to the Kansas City Royals on Monday night.

The Twins received minor league pitcher Jacob Adam, who was ranked as Kansas City’s ninth-best minor leauger pitcher.

Willingham, 35, a free agent after the season, was hitting just .210 for the Twins this season, but his 12 homers in limited at-bats were appealing for a Royals club that has struggled to find power.
