Local Sports Roundup: Blue Jay boys capture second in pool

Senior swimmer Jonas Flann and junior diver Gage Poland led a strong Jamestown Blue Jay effort Saturday at the Fargo North Invitational.

Flann was the second-highest point scorer in the five-event meet, while Poland came in 12th, helping the Blue Jays place second of six teams with 87 points.

Flann won the 100 breaststroke in 1 minutes, 5.01 seconds, edging West Fargo Sheyenne's Tim Hulbert at the wall (1:05.52). Poland (312.65) and Fargo Davies' Levi Wanger (385.80) both bested the previous pool record of 300.15 in the diving competition, with Wanger taking the win.

New state qualifiers for the Blue Jays included sophomore Cameron Winstead (267.45) and seventh-grader Jaron Coombs (235.55) on the diving board. Jonas Flann met the qualifying standard in both the 100 butterfly (1:00.10) and the 200 IM (2:11.86).

Sophomore Luca Flan also qualified for state in the 200 IM (2:22.91), while junior Cole Rasmusson (1:04.21) and senior Tyler Bjorgaard (1:05.6) surpassed the state standard in the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke, respectively.

Jamestown competes in a double dual against Bismarck Century and Bismarck Legacy Thursday in Bismarck.

Jays place 10th at Valley City

Jamestown High School wrestling placed 10th of 21 teams Saturday at the Valley City Holiday Tournament scoring 77.5 total points.

Noah Braun went 3-2 at 152, pinning Grand Forks' Evan Bridgeford in the second period for seventh place. Aaron Mack also went 3-2 for a seventh-place finish at 170, picking up a 5-2 decision over Devils Lakes' Cody Bjornson in his final match.

Johnny Browning at 160, and Paul Vandal at 195, went 3-2 as well for Jamestown. Browning placed sixth while Vandal pinned Devils Lake's George DeMarce early in the the third period to place seventh.

The Blue Jays' Aden Braun went 4-1 with a pin and a major decision at 106 wrestling unattached. Braun defeated teammate Joel Bowman 4-2 in the wrestlebacks. Bowman went 2-2. Braun and Bowman placed sixth and eighth, respectively.

The Jays' Talor Huebner went 4-1 with a major decision and two pins at 113 and placed sixth. The Jays' Colton Mewes went 2-2 on the day at 120 pounds with a pin and a major decision to finish sixth.

The Blue Jays' Braden Hatcher went 3-1 at 132 pounds with a pin and a major decision to place sixth. Tyler Magnasco went 0-2 at 182.

The Blue Jays dual Dickinson and Bismarck St. Mary's tomorrow in Dickinson.
