SWIMMING TO STATE: Blue Jay boys prepared for state meet

Seniors Colton Carlson and Jonas Flann are teammates on the same Jamestown High School swim team, but it doesn't stop them from having a friendly rivalry in the water.

Carlson finished fourth and Flann finished sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke at the West Region swimming and diving meet last weekend in Bismarck, after pushing each other in the pool all season. Both have earned a spot at state this weekend, along with 14 other Jays, at the Hulbert Aquatic Center in Fargo.

"These last two years we've been side-by-side battling it out, and this year we've gotten progressively faster throughout the year," Carlson said. "We're always racing against each other. We've trained in the same lane for the past couple of years and we're both super competitive—neither of us want to be beaten."

Carlson edged Flann by two-hundredths of a second for second place during the West Fargo Duals on Jan. 26. Flann beat Carlson by one second the following day.

"We always wish each other good luck before races, but we talk smack like, 'Good luck, but I hope I beat you,' before all the races," Carlson said.

Flann broke the school record in breaststroke with a time of 1 minute, 1.86 seconds at last year's state meet. With Carlson's best time of the season of 1:03.85 and Flann's 1:04.75, the swimmer who edges the other this weekend could very well raise the school mark even higher.

"Carlson's a great swimmer," Flann said. "My goal is to beat my time and if he beats my time I'm fine with that."

For the rest of the Jamestown swimmers, 16 total are going to state, which is tied for the most ever in program history. At least one competitor is competing in every event.

The Blue Jays will have four swimmers in the 50-yard freestyle and 1-meter diving, three in the 100-yard breaststroke and two in six other events.

"We have the possibility of someone scoring in every event, which is really good for us," said Blue Jay coach Ben Smith. "I have faith in our team that we're going to perform really well."
