FINAL FOUR Jamestown sweeps Davies for spot in Class A semifinals
When Jamestown saw West Fargo, the top team from the East Region, get upset by West Region’s four seed Mandan in the opening match of the North Dakota Class A state volleyball tournament, the Blue Jays weren’t heartbroken.
“I think we were a lot more excited because the West is our territory,” Jamestown senior McKayla Kurtz said. “We’ve played (the West) all season, so I think we’re excited we’ll get to see them tomorrow.”
Jamestown swept Fargo Davies 25-20, 25-16, 25-22 Thursday, Nov. 16, in the state quarterfinals at the Fargodome. Instead of facing a West Fargo team they hadn’t seen before that had lost once all season, the Blue Jays will take on a Mandan team they beat twice this season in the semifinals.
The two will square off at 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 16, for a spot in the state championship match.
“They are really good,” said Kurtz, who had a match-high 17 kills. “They come out and they fight. A lot of teams come out and they fight strong against us. When we watch them against other people it doesn’t seem like they’re that good, but once they’re up against us they’re killing balls and they have a really good block up there. It’s going to be a fight.”
Davies (24-10) took its first lead of the first set at 17-16 in the quarterfinals. Jamestown closed the set on a 9-3 run behind two kills each from Kurtz and Jordan Paulson.
“I think most of our players that are playing right now were here last year, so it was nice to be able to see and play under the lights, so it was good preparing us for this year,” Kurtz said.
Jamestown (34-4) trailed 7-6 in the second set, but answered with a 12-2 run to roll to a 25-16 win. The Blue Jays trailed 13-6 in the third set, but answered with a 13-3 run to take a 19-17 lead. Davies got within 23-22, but the Blue Jays closed it out.
“We have been down in matches like this before and our kids just have an unspoken confidence,” Jamestown coach Sara Hegerie said. “Even if we lost that third set I don’t think our kids would’ve been done for the weekend.
