Jimmie volleyball stays unbeaten

University of Jamestown women's volleyball passed its first stiff test of the 2018 campaign Friday at the Sarpy County Tourism Labor Day Classic in Bellevue, Neb.

The 25th-ranked Jimmies toppled 23rd-ranked Ottawa (Kan.) in five sets: 25-16, 27-29, 25-22, 19-25, 15-9. Jamestown stayed undefeated, improving to 6-0.

"(Ottawa) was a lot different than the teams we've played," UJ coach Jon Hegerle said. "They kept coming at us and it was a pretty dramatic match."

Jamestown had a chance to take a 2-0 lead in the match, but missed set point in the second frame twice on a pair of missed serves. The Jimmies, however, sent 19 service aces to the floor in total on Friday, which included nine against the Ottawa Braves and 10 during a 3-0 defeat of Montana State Northern to open the day. Jamestown wraps up the weekend classic playing Central Methodist (Mo.) today at 11 a.m.

Former Blue Jay Megan Gaffaney got into the act against the Skylights in the opener, recording 16 assists. The Jimmies' jump-serving specialist Kori Buchanan sent five aces to the floor in that one.

"We ended up playing a lot of players this morning, and it was good that we were able to do that," Hegerle said. "We've got a lot of younger, talented players and we need to get them some playing time."

In the final fifth set against the Braves, Hegerle said the Jimmies jumped ahead early and stayed in command. Jordan Thomas led the Jimmies with 13 kills and Miranda Lowman (25) and Jackie Meiklejohn (20) teammed up for 45 assists.

"We took control early in set five and never really relinquished that," Hegerle said. "That was important to see us do that."

Freshman Anna Holen scored six late kills for the Jims.

"Anna came in in set four and into set five and gave us a lot of momentum," Hegerle said. "I was pleased with her play at the end of the match."
