Alvin "Al" Plienis, 85, formerly of Jamestown, died Monday, Nov. 1, 2010, at the Veterans Hospital, Fargo, N.D., after a battle with cancer. Mr. Plienis was born Sep. 30, 1925, in Napoleon, N.D., the son of Edward and Barbara (Oberlander) Plienis. He attended school in the Napoleon area. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1950. He married Helen McDaniel on Dec. 27, 1947. He married Betty Creager in 1970. He married Bea Boice in 1986. He worked as a car salesman for many years and a bus driver. He enjoyed traveling and reading.

Leona Thorman, 86, Moorhead, Minn., died Sunday, Oct. 31, 2010, at Golden Living Center, Olivia, Minn. Leona Sylvia Bietz was born Oct. 14, 1924, in Cleveland, N.D., the daughter of Rubin and Esther (Haas) Bietz. She grew up and attended Cleveland High School, graduating in 1942. She graduated from Jamestown Business College. She married Joseph Henry Thorman on Nov. 18, 1946, at the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Jamestown. She worked at the University of Minnesota for three years, the Coca-Cola Bottling Company for 30 years and Powers Construction Company for 28 years.
Esther Billstein, 92, Billings, Mont., died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2010, at Eunice's Private Care retirement home, Billings. Esther Marian Frey was born Nov. 16, 1917, in Jamestown, the daughter of Elmer and Adeline (Koehn) Frey. She grew up on the family farm in Bloom Township. After graduating high school, she moved to Fargo, N.D., where she attended a business training school and held several government jobs. She married Louie Billstein on Jan. 1, 1939, in Jamestown. They lived in Fargo until 1943, when they moved to Billings after his discharge from the U.S. Army.
Erwin Henne, 90, Jamestown, died Monday, Nov. 1, 2010, at Eventide at Hi-Acres Manor Nursing Center, Jamestown. Mr. Henne was born Aug. 29, 1920, at the family farm near Alfred, N.D., the son of Gottfried and Dorothea (Fode) Henne. He grew up and attended the local country school. He worked on the family farm. He married Hilda Doering on Jan. 2, 1944, at Kulm, N.D. They lived on a farm near Alfred for two years and later ran a grocery store in Alfred for two years. In 1949, they moved to Marion, N.D., where they operated a grocery store for 36 years. In 1989, they moved to Jamestown.
Alvin "Al" Plienis, 85, formerly of Jamestown, died Monday, Nov. 1, 2010, at the North Dakota Veterans Hospital, Fargo, N.D. Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Eddy Funeral Chapel, Jamestown. Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown. Burial: Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown.
Barbara Wheeler, 73, Corona, Calif., died Sept. 15, 2010, at her home. Barbara Jane Wheeler was born Oct. 5, 1937, in Jamestown, the daughter of Percival and Edna Wheeler. She graduated from Jamestown High School and Jamestown College, Jamestown. She worked for Alfred Dickey Public Library as a librarian. She married John Hjellum in June 1959. They lived in Boise, Idaho, and California. She is survived by her husband; three daughters, Renn, Amy and Jane; two sons, Wesley and Ross; a sister, Beverly (Warren) Flath; a brother, Leland Wheeler; and five grandchildren. Services: held Oct. 2.
Barbara Brendel, 91, Bismarck, N.D., died Saturday, Oct. 30, 2010, at St. Vincent Care Center, Bismarck. Barbara Gross was born Sept. 4, 1919, in Logan County, North Dakota, the daughter of Mathias and Barbara (Schweitzer) Gross. She married Peter Brendel on Sept. 21, 1943. They farmed south of Napoleon, N.D. He died in 1980. She moved to Napoleon in 1980 and later to Bismarck. She was a member of St. Philip Neri Catholic Church and Christian Mothers, Napoleon. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, baking, cooking and pinochle.
