LONDON (AP) -- J.G. Ballard, best known for the autobiographical novel "Empire Of The Sun," which drew on his childhood detention in a Japanese prison camp in China, has died. He was 78. Ballard was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2006. He had been ill "for several years" and died Sunday in London at the home of his longtime partner, his agent Margaret Hanbury said. Mary Pedersen, 85 formerly of Drake, ND passed away on Sunday, April 19, 2009 at the Valley Eldercare Center in Grand Forks, ND with her family by her side. Mary Mehl was born on June 19, 1923 in Drake, ND, the daughter of John and Caroline (Stradinger) Mehl. She grew up in Drake, ND where she attended school and worked for the Gus G Store in Drake, ND. On November 17, 1943 she was united in marriage to Bernard Dickhaus in Minot, ND. They lived in Glenfield, ND until Bernard's death in 1955. She then worked for the Glenfield Bar. She married Arlen Pedersen on May 13, 1959 in Carrington, ND.
Floyd Francis Cutler Jr., 64, of Garwin, died March 18, 2009, at his home in Garwin following a short illness, surrounded by the love of his family. Floyd Francis Cutler Jr. was born July 6, 1944, in Marshalltown, Iowa, to Floyd and Vivian (Hall) Cutler Sr. He attended Garwin High School and graduated in 1962. Floyd continued his education at Marshalltown Community College in Marshalltown, and then operated a grocery store in Montour. He went on to become a meat cutter in Marshalltown for many years.

Elsie Kubler was born May 30, 1922, at Streeter, the daughter of John and Eva (Geinger) Kubler. She attended Streeter Public School and graduated from Streeter High School in 1941. She graduated from Ellendale Normal and Industrial School with a secondary grade professional teaching certificate. She taught at rural schools for about seven years. She married Ed Schulz on Sept. 3, 1944, at Streeter. They lived five miles west of Streeter. In 1969 they moved into Streeter.

Frank A. Fettig, 88, Napoleon, N.D., died Friday, April 17, 2009, at Napoleon Care Center, Napoleon, after a battle with cancer. Mr. Fettig was born was born Aug. 29, 1920, at Napoleon, the son of Anton and Barbara (Schlosser) Fettig. He married Margaret Wald on Oct. 23, 1944 at St. Anthony Church, rural Napoleon. They farmed northeast of Napoleon in Kidder County until 1955 when they sold the farm and moved to Napoleon.
