Charles Anthony Kartes, 83, Jamestown, formerly of Dickey, N.D., died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008, at Jamestown Hospital, Jamestown. Mr. Kartes was born Dec. 3, 1924, on the family farm near Berlin, N.D., the son of Charles and Myrtle (Weber) Kartes. He grew up and attended country school and graduated from Dickey High School in 1941. He worked for local farmers and for Northern Pacific Railroad. He purchased his own farm west of Dickey in 1943. He married Harriet Meiklejohn on March 7, 1946, at Dickey. They retired in 1986 and moved to Jamestown in 2002. They wintered in Arizona for many years.
Esther Denning, 83, Fargo, N.D., died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008, at Innovis Hospital, Fargo. Esther Betsch was born July 2, 1925, in Logan County, North Dakota, 12 miles west of Gackle, N.D., the daughter of Rudolph and Carolina (Kauk) Betsch. She grew up in the Gackle area. She attended Feska District School, south of Gackle. She worked for many people in the Gackle area. She married Clarence Denning on Jan. 11, 1948, at Martin Luther Lutheran Church, Fredonia, N.D.
Father Roman Edward Ludwig, 92, Priest of the Diocese of Fargo and former co-pastor of the Basillica of St. James in Jamestown,?passed away Tuesday, Oct. 7, in Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND. Born Sept. 30, 1916, in Cameron, Wis., Father Ludwig was the oldest of seven children of the Ed-ward and Emma (Fassbender) Ludwig family. He grew up in Cam-eron and Rice Lake, Wis., and attended the Josephinum High School and Seminary in Columbus, Ohio. He was ordained a priest on May 30, 1943, at the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus. His first assignment was at St.
