NEW YORK (AP) -- Alfred A. Knopf Jr., son of publishing legends and an influential publisher in his own right, died Saturday. He was 90. Knopf died of medical complications from a fall in mid-January, his wife, Alice, said. Knopf was the only child of Alfred Knopf and Blanche Wolf Knopf, giants in the field of publishing. He left his parents' company, Alfred A. Knopf Inc., in 1959 to co-found Atheneum Publishers along with Simon Michael Bessie and Hiram Haydn.

Elsie Schmitt, 81, Watford City, N.D., formerly of Hurdsfield, N.D., died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009, at Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Watford City. Elsie Marie Weippert was born Feb. 15, 1928, in Chaseley, N.D., the daughter of Peter and Magdalene (Eichele) Weippert. She grew up at Chaseley and attended Chaseley Public School. She married John Schmitt on Feb. 22, 1946, in Fessenden, N.D. They lived and farmed near Chaseley and in 1973 they moved to a farm near Hurdsfield. He died Nov. 22, 2002. She moved to Watford City in 2006. She transported students to school.
Helen Nathan, 89, Valley City, N.D., died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009, at Mercy Hospital, Valley City. Helen Mae Bakke was born Aug. 19, 1919, in Steele County, North Dakota, the daughter of Oluf and Ethel (Battles) Bakke. She grew up and attended country school in Steele County. She attended high school in Luverne, N.D., and Hope, N.D. She was baptized and confirmed in the Seventh-day Adventist Church. She married Theodore H. Nathan on March 8, 1939, in Valley City, at the Seventh-day Adventist Church. They lived in the Cooperstown, N.D., area and worked on the Art Nelson farm.
Viola Bechtle, 91, Wishek, N.D., died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009, at Wishek Home for the Aged, Wishek. Viola Goebel was born Sept. 3, 1917, in rural Logan County, the daughter of Karl and Marie (Zimmerman) Goebel. She grew up and attended country school near Lehr, N.D. She married Oscar Bechtle on Sept. 28, 1940, at her parents' home near Lehr. They lived and farmed 12 miles northeast of Wishek. She raised chickens and laying hens. From 1976 to 1985 she and her sister-in-law, Janet Hauck, managed the Stockmen's Café at Napoleon Livestock, Napoleon, N.D.
