Margo Haut of Jamestown received the 2019 National Guardianship Association Member of the Year Award. The award was given during the National Conference on Guardianship Oct. 11-15 in Lexington, Ky.
Haut and Joan Martin established Guardian Angels Inc., a local guardianship and conservatorship nonprofit, in 2014. They are Certified Legal Guardians for individuals throughout the state of North Dakota. A legal guardianship is a court-appointed relationship between a competent adult, the guardian and a person who is deemed incapacitated by the courts. The National Guardianship Association (NGA) protects the interests of guardians and the people they serve by establishing guardianship standards and encouraging integrity and competence.
In addition to being a full-time guardian, Haut is also a NGA member andcurrently serves as president for the Guardianship Association of North Dakota. As a certified guardian for individuals, Haut advocates for those who cannot advocate for themselves. She is a listening ear for their concerns, and their voice when it is needed. Haut has helped individuals to reside in their least restrictive environment, overcome exploitation of funds, reunite with family members, move closer to home or find their home and more.
“This is some of the hardest, yet most rewarding work I’ve everdone," she said.
