The North Dakota Geographic Alliance has announced that the 2020 North Dakota Geography Teacher of the Year is Cathy Goehring, a third-grade teacher from Wishek Public School. Goehring has taught at Wishek for 13 years. She graduated from Dickinson State University.

Goehring has been active in geography education in North Dakota, the Alliance said. She has participated in many NDGA summer programs and institutes. Goehring was nominated by her peers for the work she was able to do during 2020’s difficult learning situations. She was able to develop lessons that enhanced geographic education for her students.

The North Dakota Geographic Alliance was established in 1991. It is a statewide partnership between university-based learning and K-12 classrooms. The Alliance provides educators with professional development and training opportunities. It also provides teachers with resources necessary for more effective geographic learning.

The NDGA has a membership of more than 700 educators and stakeholders in North Dakota. The mission of the NDGA is to promote an effective presence of geography in the curriculum that equips North Dakota students with the geographic knowledge and skills to become productive global citizens and problems solvers in the interconnected world. The Alliance said Goehring understands the importance of attaining geographic literacy as related to the future of North Dakota.

Goehring and her husband, Dave, have three children.
