FARGO -- Wisconsin-based Esterline Control Systems -- AVISTA, producer of aerospace, defense, medical and industrial manufacturing software -- is opening an office here.

Initially six or seven engineers will locate at the Fargo office, expected to open by the end of July, the Greater Fargo Moorhead Economic Development Corp. announced Tuesday.

The company ultimately plans to employ 25 to 30 engineers in Fargo, GFMEDC officials said.

The availability of software engineers in Fargo-Moorhead and proximity to current client Phoenix International were reasons the company decided to locate in Fargo, said Tom Bragg, AVISTA vice president.

Phoenix International, which is owned by John Deere, designs, develops and manufactures electronic components and systems for heavy equipment used in industries like agriculture, construction and trucking. AVISTA assists Phoenix with development and testing of software that controls those components.

AVISTA is headquartered in Platteville, Wis., and also has an office in Minnesota.

The addition of AVISTA more firmly establishes Fargo-Moorhead as a competitive community in smart technology, said Claire Vigesaa, GFMEDC interim president.
