The folks at Valley Plains Equipment are a resource for farmers under all conditions, according to Aaron Raap, general manager of the John Deere dealership in Jamestown.

"It is times like this when it is really important to have the latest technology," he said. "Farmers need efficiency in planting and harvest equipment and John Deere is leading the industry in technology investment."

Rapp said this year has been a challenge to farmers with weather and low commodity prices hitting them hard.

"The weather the last few weeks has helped," he said. "Farmers made a good dent in the corn that is out there."

Spring is usually a busy time for farmers and this year, when some producers are still harvesting corn as the planting season approaches, will be particularly busy, said Miles Triebenbach, parts operation manager for Valley Plains Equipment.

"April, May and June are usually when we ramp up for spring planting," he said. "There is a lot of harvest still going on but it is time to think about spring planting."

Triebenbach said spring also means specials on the items that farmers will need in the upcoming season.

"The things people need with the snow disappears," he said. "We hit the bulk delivery of fluids hard before the roads go bad in the spring."

Along with parts, fluids and new equipment, the dealership offers a full line of preowned equipment.

"We're offering some good used deals right now," Rapp said. "Interest rates are favorable and we can get farmers going with some decent payments."

John Deere has a new tractor coming out this year and Valley Plains Equipment is anticipating having a demonstration model for farmers to check out.

The 8RX is the newest tractor from John Deere.

"It has four tracks instead of tires," Rapp said. "It is the latest and greatest in row crop tractors."

Rapp said John Deere is still offering a full line of lawn and turf equipment and has upgraded the "Gator," the John Deere all-terrain vehicle.

"The new gator has the best cab on the market," he said. "It is the same interior as in the cab of the tractors. Durable and has the best air conditioning on the market."

Valley Plains Equipment operates six John Deere dealerships across the region. The business employs about 50 people in Jamestown and nearly 200 across all operations.
