The 55th reunion of the Jamestown High School Class of 1963 was celebrated June 29-30. Of the 195 classmates in the graduation class, 63 attended the reunion. States represented included Texas, Kansas, Missouri, California, Minnesota, Washington, Arizona, Colorado, Virginia, Iowa, New York, South Dakota, Alaska, Montana and North Dakota.
The celebration started with a social on Friday at the Knights of Columbus Hall. There was an opportunity to become reacquainted with classmates, renew old friendships, enjoy music of the ‘60s and reminisce. The memory of each of the 49 deceased classmates was honored with an “empty chair” display and a balloon release memorial ceremony.
Attendees received 55th reunion books containing contact information for each classmate, old photos of Jamestown schools and class of 1963 memorabilia. The book also includes information obtained by researching numerous sources to determine the specific derivation of Zee-Ka-Tow, Jamestown High School’s annual. That research indicates Zee-Ka-Tow is based on the pronunciation, in the Dakota Sioux language, of the Native American word for “the blue jay.”
Memorabilia displays included a collection of Blue Jay News, candid photos of classmates, newspaper clippings, annuals, an album of photos taken during the 50th reunion and a memorial book with an obituary for each deceased classmate. During a noncompetitive golf scramble on Saturday morning, classmates showed off their skills, or lack thereof, at Hillcrest Golf Course. The reunion celebration continued that evening at the Knights of Columbus Hall.
A group photo was taken by Dutton’s Photo Gallery of Valley City. Following a buffet banquet and a brief program, the after dinner entertainment was provided by R & C School of Rock. Approximately 90 classmates and their guests attended the reunion events. Members of the JHS Class of 1963 get together for coffee at 2:30 p.m. on the second Monday of every month at The Depot Restaurant.
