At the May 26 Lions meeting, Dwaine Heinrich introduced guest speaker Mindi Schmitz, director of The Arts Center. Schmitz spoke about several of the center's sponsored programs. One program is contracting with an artist in residence. The current artist is Linda Roesch. Going to elementary schools and working with the students is just one of her duties. Schmitz also said the art exhibits are changed out every five to six weeks.
The Arts Center also puts on a commumity theater, open mic night, arts after school and various adult classes. The Downtown Arts Market performances will start on July 9, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, there will be no vendors this year. The Arts Center has two full-time and two part-time employees and numerous volunteers. Three annual fundraisers, Octoberfest, wine and cheese tasting and the Gala, help with a portion of the center's financial needs.
In other business, Gary Speidal opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and Glen Nagel gave the table prayer. Meals on Wheels delivery will be Friday, June 5. The next and last meeting before the summer break will be at 6 p.m., Tuesday, June 9, at Sabir's Buffalo Grill, where the new slate of officers and directors will be installed. Prospective members and guests are welcome. For information on membership, contact Randy Lebahn, 701-320-1678.
