Blue Jay speech team places at WDA, state

The Blue Jay speech team took second place Saturday, April 2, at the WDA tournament

Nevaeh Romfo and Haley Mathias qualified for state in serious duo, and Autumn Roberts qualified in humorous interpretation.

The speech team had five WDA champions: Emma Wiley in dramatic, Trinity Cross and Cece Maulding in humorous duo, Anja McDermid and Daniel Nyland in serious duo, Ross Motter in serious prose and Maddy Orr in inform.

Individual results include:

  • Dramatic interpretation: Emma Wiley, first, state qualifier; and Ross Motter, fourth, state qualifier
  • Extemporaneous programmed reading: CeCe Maulding, eighth
  • Extemporaneous speaking: Haley Mathias, fourth, state qualifier; and Madison Grieve, seventh
  • Humorous duo: Trinity Cross and CeCe Maulding, first, state qualifier
  • Humorous interpretation: Autumn Roberts, fifth, state qualifier; and Olivia Schriock, eighth, state qualifier
  • Impromptu speaking: Madison Grieve, fifth; and Pete Weinzier, eighth
  • Poetry: Olivia Schriock, third, state qualifier
  • Radio broadcasting: Maddy Orr, fourth, state qualifier; and Daniel Nyland, seventh 
  • Serious duo: Anja McDermid and Daniel Nyland, first state qualifier; and Haley Mathias and Nevaeh Romfo, fourth state qualifier
  • Serious prose: Ross Motter, first, state qualifier; and Anja McDermid, third state qualifier
  • Speech to entertain: Avery Mee, eighth
  • Speech to inform: Maddy Orr, first, state qualifier; Emma Wiley, second, state qualifier; Avery Mee, seventh; and Tyler Piehl eighth
  • Storytelling: Paris Eslick, second, state qualifier

The Blue Jay speech team finished third out of 18 schools with three state champions at the Class A Speech State Meet Saturday, April 9, at Jamestown High School.
The state champions were Paris Eslick in storytelling, Maddy Orr in radio broadcasting and Anja McDermid and Daniel Nyland in serious duo.

  • Extemporaneous speaking: Will Nelson, fourth
  • Humorous duo: Trinity Cross and CeCe Maulding, ninth
  • Humorous interpretation: Olivia Schriock, third
  • Impromptu speaking: Will Nelson, second; and Madison Grieve, superior speaker
  • Poetry: Olivia Schriock, sixth
  • Radio broadcasting: Maddy Orr, first
  • Serious duo: Anja McDermid and Daniel Nyland, first
  • Serious prose: Ross Motter, third; and Anja McDermid, fourth
  • Speech to inform: Emma Wiley, third; and Maddy Orr, eighth
  • Storytelling: Paris Eslick, first
