Drug court topic at Lions meeting
Lions member Mike Jan introduced speaker District Judge Dan Narum at the Nov. 7 Lions meeting. Narum spoke about Stutsman-Barnes Juvenile Drug Court (JDC). JDC is a special program aimed at intervening in the lives of substance abusing juveniles. The JDC mission is to reduce juvenile delinquent and unruly behaviors and substance abuse by referring youth to a court-managed treatment program which holds them accountable and emphasizes personal responsibility.
The program forms a partnership between the JDC judge, state’s attorney office, juvenile court, defense counsel, school system, law enforcement and treatment professionals, Narum said. This group acts as the JDC team. Narum said there is a need for employers to step up by offering job opportunities and for individuals to volunteer as a mentor to those accepted into this program.
Weldon Roberts from United Blood Service was also a guest speaker. Roberts spoke about the increasing need for blood donors. Lions member Gary Speidel is chairman of the Lion Blood Drive which will be Dec. 5-6 at the North Dakota Farmers Union offices. Members will be needed to call prospective donors for appointments.
In other business, Dec. 19 is the date assigned for Lions members to ring bells at various Salvation Army Red Kettle locations. Members will be asked to sign up for ringing bells at future meetings. Members were also asked to turn in their money from the sale of the raffle tickets as soon as the tickets are sold.
At the recent state Lions convention, Dwaine Heinrich was the recipient of the International President’s Certificate of Appreciation for his outstanding leadership and service. In addition, Kathy Clemens was elected first vice district governor, an office she will assume in July 2018.
Mildred Hager presided over the meeting and led with the Pledge of Allegiance. Ed Anderson gave the table prayer. The next meeting will be at 6 p.m. today at the Vets Club. Guest speaker will be Adam Gehlhar, Jamestown High School principal. Prospective members and guests are welcome. For information on membership, contact Randy Lebahn, 320-1678.
