The Kiwanis Club of Jamestown inducted two new members at the March 6 meeting. Sara Coleman and Ben Griego are both new to Jamestown from Denver, Colo. Coleman is life enrichment assistant at Edgewood Vista, and Griego is the morning show host at Mix 93.3 and the production director for KSJB/KSJZ.

President Amanda Thrift led the meeting attended by 26 members. Chuck Axtman led group singing accompanied by Tim Burchill. Tara Miller collected “Happy Dollars” for the Salvation Army. Miller was the member spotlight for the club, sharing information about herself with club members. She is recently married and has six children between her and her husband.

Kiwanis member Eric Tuchscher introduced speaker Sean Johnson, athletic director for the University of Jamestown. Johnson has been in this position for two years, overseeing athletics at the university. He said the university has nine men’s sports and nine women’s sports, plus men’s hockey. He said it’s been had an exciting year with volleyball having the most wins for a season, women’s basketball going to nationals, the baseball team ranked 16th in the nation and it being the inaugural year of men’s hockey. In 2018-2019 the university will move to a new conference called the Great Plains Athletic Conference, which Johnson believes will present new opportunities for the school.

“We’re proud of our student-athletes,” Johnson said in regard to the 530 students who play sports for UJ. “They are not only strong athletes, but also academically with an average of 3.1 GPA,” he said.

Johnson also gave an update on the Newman Arena that will be finished in August. The new facility will seat 2,000 people and be home to volleyball, basketball and wrestling; in addition, it will have locker rooms, athletic training rooms and coach offices.
