The North Dakota Long Term Care Association (NDLTCA) recently awarded a $1,000 Allan B. Engen Nurse Scholarship to Alexis Kleven, a certified nursing assistant.

Employed with Ave Maria Village for four years, Kleven is attending the University of Jamestown and majoring in nursing.

"I have been working in long-term care since June 2012. I continue to learn every day from my co-workers, residents and their families," Kleven said. "One unique challenge long-term care has is that the work is never done. There is constantly something to do. However, whenever I get a moment when the work is done, I like to sit down with my residents and get to know them better. I believe if I know my residents better, I am able to provide exceptional care."

The Allan B. Engen Nurse Scholarship was established in recognition of the work and accomplishments of Allan B. Engen, the NDLTCA's first executive director who died in 1989.

"This scholarship fund is designed to help combat North Dakota's nursing shortage, which is especially intense in North Dakota long-term care facilities," said Shelly Peterson, NDLTCA president. "We are especially pleased with the caliber of winners like Alexis and look forward to their continued contributions to long-term nursing care."
