Medora, Madame de Mores returns to the Chateau de Mores State Historic Site the weekend of June 19-20. Portrayed by Karen Nelson in the History Alive! program, Ma-dame de Mores will talk about her stay at the chateau in 1903, in what was her last visit to the Dakota summer home.
Medora, Madame de Mores's performances will be at 10:30 a.m., 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. (MT) on Saturday, June 19, and Sunday, June 20. All performances are free, and sponsored by the State Historical Society of North Dakota.
Madame de Mores was the wife of the Marquis de Mores, who attempted in the 1880s to build a beef empire in what is now southwestern North Dakota.
As Medora, Madame de Mores, Nelson wears a period dress, designed and sewn by Michael Stevenson of Dickinson, N.D. It is based on historical clothing from the de Mores family now in the collections of the State Historical Society of North Dakota.
Medora's stay at the Chateau in 1903 came 17 years after the Marquis left the town of Medora, his beef empire in ruins. The State Historical Society of North Dakota sponsors the History Alive! program to explore the lives and times of decades gone by. Begun in 1988, the unique program combines the theater arts with history. The 20-minute monologues are based on original letters, diaries and other documents, many from the archives of the State Historical Society of North Dakota.
