Special Olympics discussed at Kiwanis
Kiwanis member Hayley Wolf introduced Janell Hanson, director of Special Olympics in Jamestown, who spoke at the Feb. 5 Kiwanis meeting.
Hanson has been involved with Special Olympics as coach and volunteer for 18 years and director for one. Locally Special Olympics has about 110 athletes and has been around since the 1970s. Each season is eight to 10 weeks long; sports include but aren’t limited to: basketball, soccer, track and field, snowshoeing and bowling. Athletes range from ages 8-78.
Hanson said every four years there are national games. The local club will have three athletes attending the 2018 USA Games for Special Olympics in Seattle, Wash.
President Jason Gruebele led the meeting attended by 19 members. Ben Griego collected “Happy Dollars” for Prairie Paws Rescue. There will be no meeting on Feb.
