City Engineer Reed Schwartzkopf reviewed with Rotary members some areas in the Land Use and Transportation Study which are being recommended for possible implementation. The total cost to implement everything could cost as much as $252 million, he said. The Planning Commission and City Council will need to prioritize which areas need to be completed and also consider the safety issues which have been and continue to be of concern. The public has provided input, which Schwartzkopf said is always good. A special meeting will be June 22 with recommendations going to the City Council at its July 6 meeting.
Movement of traffic is part of the recommendations, with a 12th Avenue Northeast bridge as one of the pieces, changing traffic downtown from four lanes to two lanes and having two turning lanes, which will help provide a safer way of moving the traffic, he said. Other areas needing repairs are the Cavendish water tower, the storm sewer and sanitary sewer, Schwartzkopf said. They can’t be done all at once, but prioritizing is key, he said.
Nick Schmidt welcomed members and guest and gave the table blessing. K.C. DeBoer was the sergeant-at-arms and collected “Happy Dollars” for Camp Rokiwan. Mark Sherfy handed out a sign-up sheet for helper for the State All-Star Soccer Tournament on June 3 at the Rotary Soccer Field. Guests were Jack Gaa, former Jamestown resident, and Sunil Misra, Orange Park, Fla. Misra is a member of the Orange Park Sunset Club. Orange Park is near Jacksonville, Fla. He presented the club with one of his club’s banners.
Holly Utke is in charge of today’s program, Casey Stoudt the invocation, Clarice Liechty the music and Carrie Orn is sergeant-at-arms. Rotary meets at 12:10 p.m. Tuesdays at the Quality Inn & Suites.
