Norwegian cheese and wine tasting was the program presented at the Jamestown Sons of Norway meeting on Sept. 21. The members tasted five types of imported Norwegian cheese and discussed their characteristics. Jodi Bunde gave the presentation that also included discussions on how to taste fine cheese, the Norwegian invention of the cheese slicer, and a history of seters, which are Norwegian mountain dairies. Along with the cheese, members enjoyed wine and apple cider.
Mary Englund, president of the lodge, presided over the business meeting. Agenda items reviewed were the upcoming annual bake sale and lefse sale on Nov. 20 at the Buffalo Mall, lefse-making day on Nov. 6, and hosting a regional Norwegian folk dance workshop in March 2011.
Gloria Harr and Laurel Gusaas hosted the meeting and provided krumkake, cookies and coffee after the meeting. The members signed a thank-you card for Greg Spenningsby. Spenningsby surprised members tending the 10th Street flower garden with a generous donation as thanks for their city beautification work. Spenningsby said the reason he spontaneously pulled over to thank members was that he enjoyed seeing the flowers everyday on his truck route. Members of the Garden Committee include Genene Colbert, Barb Enger, Karen Freeman, Marilyn Garrett, Verney Jorgenson, Lois Knudson, Linda Mohn, Vern Quam, Maralyn Salting and Corrine Zabel.
The next meeting is at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 19 at the Gardenette Community Room, 1321 Gardenette Drive, Jamestown. Members are asked to bring their passports, as the program will be Sweden, the next stop on "Scandinavia in a Nutshell Tour." Guests and visitors always welcome.
