One family in Jamestown is trying to make the Thanksgiving holiday a little more festive with delivered meals.

Amber Martin of Jamestown hit on the idea after the family was given a large turkey. She had already decided to hold a non-traditional Thanksgiving meal so she decided to cook up the turkey and all the trimmings to distribute to people in the community who didn't have access to the traditional holiday meal.

"College students, the elderly, whoever needs a meal," Martin said. "We have about 25 signed up so far. Churches and the college have been getting the word out."

The bulk of the cooking is being done at Paradiso Mexican Restaurant with family and volunteers also preparing food at their homes. The meals will then be delivered by Martin and her family around Jamestown.

"We're doing this to show the kids there are things to be thankful for," she said.

Amber and Devon Martin's six children range in age from 2 years old to 13. The family also lost an infant last summer.

"We're kind of winging it and putting them all to work," Martin said. "Showing our kids what's important after losing our daughter in June."

The meal also takes on importance with the cancellation of the traditional Community Thanksgiving Dinner served at Concordia Lutheran Church this year due to the coronavirus. That meal had a nearly 30-year tradition in Jamestown and often served about 700 people in the church and by delivered meals.

Martin said her family doesn't anticipate serving that many.

"If we serve 50 or 60 people, that's fine," she said. "They'll have something they wouldn't have if it weren't for the kids helping me do this."
