Madelyn Welding, daughter of Richard and Julie Welding, was chosen as the foreign language student of the quarter by the foreign language department at Jamestown High School. She is a junior and has maintained an "A" throughout her language study.
Welding is currently studying Spanish IV at the high school.
Welding's love of people, different cultures and language has motivated her to visit nine countries in the last three years. The countries are Australia, New Zealand, England, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and Spain. Her first two trips where with a group called People to People Student Ambassadors. On these trips they stayed in homes with families from the various regions. In addition, in Australia and England they met members of Congress.
On each trip the students did a service project. In Australia they planted citrus trees at a shelter for women and children. In Germany they helped clear noxious weeds out of the Black Forest.
Welding's third trip was with the Jamestown High School Spanish Club last summer. The group traveled to historic sites and learned about the culture and history of each site. They experienced the foods of the regions and also stayed with a family for 10 days.
