North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem should be re-elected by a wide margin. He’s demonstrated again and again his ability to protect the integrity of his office while rising to an entirely new set of challenges posed by an increase in crime caused primarily, but not exclusively, by the state’s western oil boom. For her part, Grand Forks attorney Kiara Kraus-Parr has been lamely arguing that the AG is somehow responsible for the new crime problem. That’s nonsense.Stenehjem has been among law enforcement leaders in developing a comprehensive multi-jurisdictional approach to crime. There is a long way to go, but he can point to several successes. He also is one of the strongest advocates of open government ever to sit in the AG’s office. He is never reluctant to take to the woodshed governments and agencies that violate open meetings and open records law.Stenehjem has earned re-election. (Endorsements represent the views of Forum Communications Co., The Jamestown Sun’s parent company.)
